Matisse is the embodiment of this philosophy, answering the darkness of WWII with his whimsical, happy creations. It’s not that he didn’t care about the world outside his front door, it only intensified his sense of the loveliness of the light green leaves just glimpsed through the gap in the curtains, or his delight in the patterns of afternoon light, and the overall freshness and charm of a bowl of flowers in an elegant room. He reminds us that these things are still here.
